Forest School and Outdoor Learning

At Archbishop Cranmer CE Primary Academy, we believe that some of the most memorable and meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom. Through our vision of 'life in all its fullness' (John 10:10), we provide every child with rich opportunities to explore, discover and learn within the natural environment, developing confidence, resilience and a lifelong appreciation of God's creation.

Our extensive outdoor curriculum enables children to experience learning in authentic contexts, applying their knowledge and skills across the curriculum whilst developing independence, teamwork and respect for the world around them. Whether through Forest School, educational visits, gardening, outdoor worship or residential experiences, we aim to inspire every child to become confident, responsible and reflective learners.

Our Forest School and Outdoor Learning provision is carefully designed to develop:

  • confidence, resilience and independence
  • teamwork, communication and leadership
  • practical problem-solving and risk management
  • curiosity about the natural world
  • respect for the environment and God's creation
  • physical wellbeing and positive mental health

Through regular Forest School sessions, pupils have the opportunity to explore, investigate and take supported risks within our woodland environment. Children learn through practical experiences, developing skills in shelter building, tool use, navigation, fire safety, knot tying and environmental stewardship. Our Forest School programme follows the recognised Forest School principles, encouraging child-led exploration, creativity and reflection whilst promoting holistic development. 

Outdoor learning extends far beyond Forest School. Throughout the year, pupils benefit from a wide range of experiences including educational visits, residentials, gardening, caring for our school chickens, environmental projects, wildlife conservation, outdoor worship, sports events and community partnerships. These opportunities enrich classroom learning, strengthen links across the curriculum and help children develop a sense of belonging within both their local and global communities. 

Our outdoor curriculum reflects our commitment to providing a genuine Culture of Opportunity, ensuring every child experiences learning that is memorable, purposeful and rooted in real-life experiences. By making full use of our school grounds and the wider community, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and character needed to flourish both now and in the future.

At Archbishop Cranmer, we encourage children to embrace challenge, care for one another and value the natural world around them.
