Welcome to Year 4! Our class page is your go-to place for key information about life in Class 4. We are looking forward to a year filled with challenge, discovery and opportunity, where every child is encouraged to be curious, resilient and proud of their achievements. Together, we will learn, grow and create many wonderful memories along the way.

Our Timetable - Autumn Term 

   

Please note that our PE day is on a Wednesday afternoon with the KS2 Team. Please come to school dressed in PE kit on these days. Earrings and other jewellery should be removed for PE and hair tied back where possible. 

PE Kit includes: 

• Red or dark PE hoodies,  black or grey tracksuit trousers or shorts (unbranded) 

• Black, grey or white trainers 

• Zip-up sports jackets are suitable for colder weather. 

  

Curriculum Overview

Autumn Term:

Writing: This term, children will develop their writing through a range of engaging fiction and non-fiction texts. They will write imaginative narratives, persuasive speeches, explanation texts and descriptive writing, developing their vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and handwriting along the way. Throughout the term, pupils will become increasingly confident in writing for different audiences and purposes, whilst applying their reading skills to inspire and improve their own writing.

Maths: Children will develop their understanding of place value by representing, comparing, ordering and rounding numbers before progressing to addition and subtraction. Later in the term, they will explore area before developing their multiplication and division skills. Throughout the year, there will be a strong focus on building fluency in times tables alongside reasoning and problem-solving.

Science: We will explore how the human digestive system works, learning about the journey food takes through the body and the important role of each organ. They will investigate the differences between primary and permanent teeth, revisit the importance of good dental hygiene and compare the teeth of different animals, considering how these relate to their diets. They will also learn about food chains, identifying producers, prey and predators and exploring how living things depend upon one another for survival.

Geography: Children will investigate where our food comes from and explore the journey many everyday foods make before reaching our homes. They will learn about the journey of a cocoa bean from farm to supermarket and consider why it is important that farmers and producers receive a fair price for their work. Through map work and geographical enquiry, children will develop an understanding of global trade and the importance of making responsible choices.

History: We will travel back in time to explore the Anglo-Saxon period, investigating who the Anglo-Saxons were, why they came to Britain and how they have shaped our history. They will examine historical evidence, investigate artefacts and consider whether the Anglo-Saxons deserve the reputation they are often given.

Computing: Children will develop their creativity and digital skills through animation, 3D design and online safety, learning to use technology responsibly, respectfully and safely.

Art and Design: Children will be introduced to contemporary artists who combine painting, sewing and textiles to create unique works of art inspired by landscapes. They will experiment with a range of materials and techniques, including creating painted backgrounds on fabric before adding stitched detail to produce their own mixed-media artwork.

Design and Technology: We will investigate how structures are strengthened before designing and constructing their own freestanding pavilion. They will explore different materials and construction techniques, creating a structure that is both strong and aesthetically pleasing before evaluating their finished design.

Religious Education: We will explore the question "What kind of world did Jesus want?", considering Jesus' teachings and how Christians seek to follow them today. They will also learn about the events of Pentecost, exploring the impact of the Holy Spirit on Jesus' followers and why this remains significant for Christians today.

RSE and PSHE: Children will explore how to make healthy choices to support both their physical and mental wellbeing. They will also learn how to build positive relationships by developing respect, empathy and kindness towards others, recognising the importance of valuing and celebrating differences within our school community.

Physical Education: Children will develop their skills across a range of sports, improving their coordination, balance, agility and teamwork. They will learn to apply tactics, refine fundamental movement skills and demonstrate resilience, respect and good sportsmanship in both competitive and cooperative activities.

Reading

Reading regularly at home is one of the most effective ways to support your child's progress across the curriculum, helping to develop vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and confidence.

In Year 4, children are encouraged to read at least three times each week at home. Each time your child reads with an adult, please record this in their reading record by signing and dating the entry. Children who read three or more times each week will receive a tick on our Year 4 Reading Challenge chart. Those who achieve a tick every week throughout the half term will earn a special reading reward to celebrate their commitment and enthusiasm for reading. Please continue to discuss books together by asking questions about characters, events, vocabulary and predictions, as these conversations help develop deeper understanding and enjoyment of reading.

Homework

Children will receive weekly spelling and multiplication tables practice to reinforce their learning in school. Each child will be provided with their own login details to access TimesTables.co.uk, allowing them to practise little and often at home in preparation for the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) later in the year. We also encourage children to read regularly at home, as this has one of the greatest impacts on progress across the curriculum. 

Throughout the year, children will also be set creative homework projects linked to our curriculum topics, providing opportunities to extend and celebrate their learning beyond the classroom.

Please encourage your child to complete homework independently where possible, offering support and encouragement when needed.

Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

During June, all Year 4 children complete the statutory Multiplication Tables Check. Throughout the year we place a strong emphasis on developing rapid recall of all multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12 through engaging lessons, games and regular practice. Supporting your child with times tables at home little and often makes a huge difference.

Outdoor Learning (Forest School):

Throughout the year, children will take part in our exciting Forest School programme, giving them regular opportunities to learn outdoors and develop practical life skills. Children will build shelters, develop their orienteering and map-reading skills, learn new knots, safely use a range of tools, work collaboratively to solve challenges and explore the natural environment through hands-on experiences. Forest School encourages resilience, independence, teamwork, creativity and a lifelong appreciation of the outdoors. 

As our Forest School sessions take place throughout the year and in all weathers, we kindly ask that every child keeps a named pair of wellington boots in school. Please also ensure your child brings a suitable waterproof coat on wet or colder days. During warmer weather, children should come to school with sun cream already applied and, where appropriate, a named sun hat and water bottle.

Educational Visits and Residentials

Throughout the year, we aim to enrich our curriculum through educational visits, visitors and memorable learning experiences. These opportunities help bring learning to life and enhance children's understanding across the curriculum.
