Protected Characteristics

Promoting the Protected Characteristics

At Archbishop Cranmer CE Primary Academy, we are committed to creating an inclusive community where every child is valued and respected.

Guided by our vision of ‘life in all its fullness’, we ensure that all members of our school community feel they belong.

We teach our children that:

  • there are no ‘outsiders’ at our school
  • everyone is different and valued
  • we celebrate diversity
  • we are all equal

Equality, Inclusion and British Values

We meet our duties under the Equality Act (2010) by promoting respect, understanding and equality for all.

Alongside this, we actively promote British Values, ensuring that pupils develop an understanding of:

  • democracy
  • the rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

These values are closely aligned with our Christian vision and underpin life at Archbishop Cranmer.

The nine protected characteristics are:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • marriage or civil partnership
  • sex
  • sexual orientation
  • pregnancy and maternity

Living Our Values in Practice

We actively promote equality, diversity and British Values through our daily practice. This includes:

  • weekly Picture News assemblies, encouraging pupils to explore current issues and develop informed views with opportunity for class discussion and reflection to extend the conversation
  • regular opportunities for reflection, supporting pupils to consider values, beliefs and perspectives
  • pupil leadership through our Diversity and Equity Leaders, who lead initiatives and raise awareness across the school
  • whole-school events such as Culture Day, celebrating diversity within our community
  • our curriculum, including RHSE and RE, where themes of equality, relationships and respect are explored

Developing Respect and Responsibility

Through our approach, pupils develop:

  • self-confidence and a strong sense of identity
  • respect for others and their beliefs
  • an understanding of fairness, equality and justice
  • awareness of their role in creating a positive and inclusive society

This reflects our commitment to dignity, respect and justice, rooted in our Christian vision.

Pupil Voice and Courageous Advocacy

We are proud of the way our pupils engage with issues of equality and social justice.

Our student leaders have shared their work on courageous advocacy, exploring themes such as race, gender and fairness, and presenting their ideas beyond school.
