Outdoor Learning

At Archbishop Cranmer CE Primary Academy, we believe that outdoor learning and connection with nature are fundamental parts of education.

Through our vision of ‘life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10), we aim to inspire children to develop curiosity, resilience, responsibility and a deep appreciation of the world around them.

Outdoor learning forms an important part of our Culture of Opportunity, supporting pupils’ academic, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

We provide regular opportunities for pupils to learn outdoors across the curriculum. These experiences help children to:

  • explore and investigate through first-hand learning
  • develop teamwork, confidence and independence
  • build resilience and problem-solving skills
  • deepen their understanding of the natural environment

Outdoor learning takes many forms across school life, including:

  • Forest School and environmental learning
  • outdoor curriculum lessons
  • gardening and sustainability projects
  • educational visits and local area studies
  • outdoor reflection and wellbeing opportunities

Caring for Our World

As a church school, we encourage children to develop a sense of stewardship and responsibility for God’s world.

Our pupils play an active role in promoting sustainability and caring for the environment through initiatives led by our Pupil Parliament and Eco teams.

We are proud to have achieved:

  • Green Flag Eco-School Distinction
  • Platinum Woodland Trust Award

We have also shared our work beyond school, including presenting at the Church School Leaders’ Conference about our journey in embedding outdoor learning.

Outdoor Learning in Action

Outdoor learning is woven throughout our curriculum and wider provision. Examples include:

  • outdoor English and maths lessons
  • Forest School sessions
  • environmental and biodiversity projects
  • horticulture and gardening opportunities through clubs such as Plot to Pot
  • outdoor wellbeing and reflection opportunities

Through these experiences, children develop a strong sense of belonging, responsibility and connection to their local and wider environment.
