Maths

At Archbishop Cranmer CE Primary Academy, we believe that mathematics is an essential life skill and that all children can succeed in maths through high-quality teaching, challenge and encouragement.

Through our vision of ‘life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10), we aim to develop confident mathematicians who are resilient, curious and able to apply their mathematical understanding across a range of contexts.

Our maths curriculum is designed to ensure pupils:

  • develop secure fluency in key mathematical concepts and procedures
  • reason mathematically and explain their thinking clearly
  • solve problems with increasing confidence and resilience
  • make connections across different areas of mathematics
  • develop independence and perseverance as learners

We follow a mastery approach to mathematics, where children are encouraged to develop a deep understanding of concepts through carefully sequenced learning, practical resources and mathematical discussion.

Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to:

  • explore mathematical ideas using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations
  • explain and justify their reasoning
  • apply learning in a range of contexts
  • revisit and embed key knowledge over time

At Archbishop Cranmer, we promote positive attitudes towards mathematics and encourage children to embrace challenge, reflect on mistakes and develop confidence in their own abilities. Through our Take Care learning behaviours, pupils are supported to become thoughtful, resilient and independent mathematicians.
