At Archbishop Cranmer CE Primary Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every child becomes a confident and successful reader.

We believe that secure early reading skills provide the foundation for future learning and support children in living ‘life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10).

Phonics is taught through a systematic and structured approach using the Bug Club Phonics programme, which is fully aligned to the Department for Education’s systematic synthetic phonics criteria. 

Through high-quality daily phonics teaching, children are supported to:

• recognise and recall sounds and letter patterns
• blend sounds to read words accurately and fluently
• segment words for spelling and writing
• develop confidence, fluency and enjoyment in reading

Reading is central to our phonics provision. Children access carefully matched decodable books that align closely with the sounds they are learning in school, helping them to practise and apply their phonics knowledge successfully. 

We work closely with parents and carers to support early reading at home through:

• decodable reading books
• online Bug Club resources and eBooks
• phonics workshops and guidance materials

Our aim is for all children to develop a lifelong love of reading and leave our early reading provision equipped with the skills, confidence and enthusiasm to flourish as readers.
