    At Archbishop Cranmer CE Primary Academy, we believe that History helps children to understand the world around them by exploring how people, events and civilisations have shaped the society we live in today.

    Through our vision of 'life in all its fullness' (John 10:10), we aim to develop pupils who are curious, reflective and thoughtful historians, equipped with the knowledge and skills to investigate the past, understand the present and shape the future.

    Our History curriculum is carefully designed to develop:

    • secure chronological understanding
    • curiosity about Britain's past and the wider world
    • confidence in historical enquiry and investigation
    • critical thinking and the ability to evaluate evidence
    • understanding of how history influences modern life

    Through enquiry-based learning, pupils are encouraged to ask historically meaningful questions, investigate a range of sources and communicate their ideas using evidence. As they progress through school, children develop both substantive knowledge (what happened in the past) and disciplinary knowledge (how historians investigate and interpret the past), enabling them to think critically and make informed judgements.

    History learning is enriched through:

    • local history studies and visits
    • educational visits and workshops
    • the study of significant people, events and civilisations
    • opportunities to explore artefacts and historical sources
    • meaningful links across the wider curriculum

    Across school, pupils explore a rich range of historical periods, from the Stone Age and Ancient Egypt to the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Ancient Greece, the Maya civilisation and the Second World War. They also study the history of their local area, helping them develop a strong sense of place and understand how their community has evolved over time.

    At Archbishop Cranmer, we encourage children to question, investigate and reflect upon the past with curiosity and empathy. Through our Take Care learning behaviours, pupils become resilient learners who understand that history is shaped through evidence, interpretation and discussion, preparing them to become informed and responsible citizens.
