At Archbishop Cranmer CE Primary Academy, we believe that music is a powerful form of expression that inspires creativity, builds confidence and brings people together. Through singing, performing, composing and listening, children develop a lifelong appreciation of music whilst discovering the joy of making music together.

Through our vision of 'life in all its fullness' (John 10:10), we aim to develop pupils who are confident, enthusiastic and reflective musicians, equipped with the knowledge and skills to perform, create and appreciate music from a wide range of cultures, traditions and historical periods.

Our Music curriculum is carefully designed to develop:

• confidence in singing, performing and composing
• listening, appraising and musical understanding
• knowledge of a wide range of musical styles, genres and traditions
• creativity, collaboration and self-expression
• appreciation of the importance of music in everyday life and across different cultures

Through engaging, practical lessons, pupils develop their musical skills through singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments, improvising, composing and performing. Children progressively build their understanding of rhythm, pitch, pulse, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and notation, enabling them to become increasingly confident and expressive musicians.

Music learning is enriched through:

• weekly singing and music lessons
• whole-school collective worship and hymn practice
• Christmas, Easter and Summer performances
• opportunities to perform to a range of audiences
• extra-curricular choir and instrumental tuition

Across school, pupils explore music from a diverse range of historical periods, composers, genres, cultures and traditions whilst developing their own performance and composition skills. Using the Sparkyard music curriculum, learning is carefully sequenced to ensure children revisit and build upon previous knowledge, enabling them to develop fluency, creativity and confidence as musicians. Music plays a central role in school life, creating opportunities for every child to perform, collaborate and experience the enjoyment of making music together.
