At Archbishop Cranmer CE Primary Academy, we believe that learning a modern foreign language broadens children's horizons, deepens their understanding of different cultures and gives them the confidence to communicate beyond their own community.

Through our vision of 'life in all its fullness' (John 10:10), we aim to develop pupils who are curious, respectful and confident language learners, equipped with the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively whilst developing an appreciation of French language and culture.

Our Languages curriculum is carefully designed to develop:

• confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in French
• accurate pronunciation and increasing fluency
• understanding of vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure
• curiosity about different cultures and traditions
• confidence to communicate with others in a different language

Through engaging and practical lessons, pupils develop their language skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing activities, alongside songs, games, role play and conversation. Children progressively build their understanding of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation whilst learning to recognise patterns within language and apply these with increasing confidence and accuracy. 

Languages learning is enriched through:

• interactive speaking and listening activities
• songs, stories and role play
• opportunities to explore French culture and traditions
• French Club and wider enrichment opportunities
• meaningful links across the wider curriculum

Across Key Stage 2, pupils follow the carefully sequenced Kapow Primary Languages curriculum, which develops learning through the six key strands of Speaking and Pronunciation, Listening, Reading and Writing, Grammar, Intercultural Understanding and Language Detective Skills. By revisiting and building upon previous learning, children become increasingly confident communicators whilst developing an appreciation of the similarities and differences between languages and cultures. 

At Archbishop Cranmer, we encourage children to embrace new challenges, communicate with confidence and celebrate the richness of different languages and cultures. Through our Take Care learning behaviours, pupils become resilient, reflective learners who understand that learning another language opens doors to new experiences, friendships and opportunities.
